Key Takeaways

U.S. equities bounced back from yesterday's big S&P 500 and Nasdaq selloff that was triggered by news that Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup DeepSeek had developed an AI large language model (LLM) at much lower costs than those of big U.S. firms. The Nasdaq rose 1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 also gained.

Royal Caribbean Group ( RCL ) was the best-performing stock in the S&P 500 after the cruise ship operator reported better-than-anticipated earnings and gave strong guidance, boosted by higher prices and onboard revenue. The news also lifted shares of rivals Carnival ( CCL ) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ( NCLH ).

Shares of Boeing ( BA ) advanced when CEO Kelly Ortberg said that the aircraft maker's recovery efforts are moving forward, and gave an upbeat assessment of deliveries for the company’s 737 Max airliner.

RTX ( RTX ) shares took off when the aerospace and defense contractor beat profit and sales estimates as revenue at all three of its divisions grew. However, shares of rival Lockheed Martin ( LMT ) dropped when the company's sales came up short of expectations and it took a huge charge for costs related to existing classified programs.

General Motors ( GM ) shares sank as the carmaker reported a fourth-quarter loss because of restructuring costs in China and expenses for its robotaxi program. In addition, shares were hurt by concerns about the potential impact if President Trump goes through on threats of tariffs.

Synchrony Financial ( SYF ) shares were down after the online bank’s missed earnings and revenue estimates as credit expenses increased and net interest income was lower than anticipated.

Gold futures climbed. Oil futures ticked lower. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was slightly higher. The U.S. dollar gained against the euro, pound, and yen. Bitcoin was higher, trading above $102,000.
